Update from the Department of Education and Skills

Dear parents,

As you are aware, the Government has made a decision on foot of public health advice to extend the level 5 restriction measures in place to supress the spread of Covid-19, and as part of these measures to continue this phase of school closure at present. This decision has been made in the context of wishing to avoid the movement of the full one-million strong school-going population daily. The closure of schools will be kept under ongoing review by Government.
According to the letter, it is a priority for Government to address the needs of children with special educational needs and provide additional supports for these children during this period of closure, in line with public health advice. The Department of Education is engaging closely with stakeholder representatives during this limited period, to work towards achieving consensus on a satisfactory way forward to ensure a safe phased return of children with special educational needs to inschool learning. This remains a high priority for all partners. The Department is also continuing to work with education partners to ensure that all schools can safely fully reopen, in line with public health advice.

It is their intentions to inform us us soon as is possible their plan for the reopening of schools. Unfortunately there is no clear date set yet so we remain closed until further clarity is provided to everyone.

The Department of Education has requested that I share with you the following letter where you will find appropriate resources and links which may be of some help to you during this difficult time.

As we now enter an extended period of remote distance learning, i encourage each of you to try and pace yourself so that you can make this period of remote learning as sustainable as possible for both you and your child(ren).
Identify the days you have too much on and try to shift what you can so there is balance to your day and “release that valve”
Ring fence child free time for yourself if possible. We recognise that this is a very pressured time for parents so just like you are on an airplane- put on your own mask first and then you will be able to breathe easier when helping your child.
If your child cannot get all the work completed take a couple of minutes to help them. Help them prioritise so they get the most important things done.
Reach out for support- to fellow parents or to your child’s class teacher. We are in this together for the long haul.
